Living
History in Güllük
There are many ancient cities in Güllük. "Iassos"
is the most important one. There we can see the ruins of the
antique theater, " agora" ( the bazaar),
some of the temples, tombs, gates of the city, and water
archs and on a small hill beyond the bay there is "Borgylia",
which is now called Varvil.
There
are also lots of legends and stories told in
Güllük. Most of these are on friendship between
people and dolphins. In one these stories a very beautiful
child called "Hermias" gets lost in the bay
and later found by a dolphin and brought to the shore on the
dolphin's back. Unfortunately they both die on the shore.
Now their friendship is symbolized by a statue of a
dolphin with a child on its back in the center of the town.
